The principle of combined heat and power
Use energy once, benefit twice: this is the principle of combined heat and power (CHP). In the past, electricity and usable heat were usually generated separately, but combined heat and power connects these processes to reduce the overall amount of fuel required. This makes combined heat and power the most efficient way of using fuels to generate energy, regardless of whether the fuel in question comes from fossil or renewable sources. It has enormous potential for the conservation of resources and the protection of our climate. Increased use of CHP can help lower CO2 emissions and reduce the amount of primary energy needed.
